SMOFlipid Infusion Therapy – Information for Patients

SMOFlipid is an infusion solution that contains fatty acids (lipids derived from soybean oil, MCT oil, olive oil, and fish oil). It was not originally developed for infertility treatment, but in certain cases, it is also used as a supportive therapy during fertility treatments.

When is SMOFlipid infusion therapy used?

• In cases of repeated implantation failure (multiple unsuccessful embryo transfers)
• In cases of recurrent miscarriages
• When there is elevated NK (natural killer) cell count or suspicion of immunological imbalance

How is the treatment administered?

• The infusion is given at an individually scheduled time, based on the specialist’s therapeutic recommendation.
• The volume and duration of the infusion (typically 250 ml over approximately 4–5 hours) are determined by the treating physician.

Important information to know:

• The treatment is always tailored to the individual, based on a specialist’s decision.
• An appointment must be booked in advance for the medical consultation and assessment with our fertility advisor.
• The treatment can only be initiated once the required medical documentation is completed and the necessary approval (authorization) requested by our institution has been received.

Additional important information:

• After the authorization is received, the lipid infusion is administered at a scheduled time, which takes place at the Erzsébet Fürdő Outpatient Surgery Center. Appointments can also be made through our fertility advisor.
• The SMOFlipid infusion is provided by our institution – administering externally provided materials is not permitted.
• Administration at home or any other location is dangerous! Infusion without proper medical personnel, dosing, and controlled drip rate can be harmful and poses a significant health risk!
